News Release
New System Integrates Technologies from NextGen, SeeBeyond, and Tellurian To Improve Medical Outcomes and Reduce Costs by Automating Clinical and Administrative Record-Keeping San Ramon, CA (February 7, 2005) Hill Physicians Medical Group, one of the largest independent medical groups in the U.S., today announced the implementation of an integrated electronic medical records (EMR) and practice management system. Two years in the planning, this online system is designed to reduce the burden and inefficiencies of paper records, enabling physicians and office staff to greatly improve patient care and convenience. Hill Physicians' new paperless system will roll out starting in March with two pilot installations, and then be phased in to its 2,600 providers in Northern California over the next three to five years. "Our implementation of the new EMR and practice management system is another milestone in our long-term effort to improve the daily practice of medicine," said Steve McDermott, CEO of Hill Physicians. "The system's efficiency and accuracy not only increase the time that doctors and staff have available for treating patients, they also help ensure that medical protocols are correctly followed. This, in turn, leads to more verifiable data, better outcomes, and lower costs for employers and patients." NextGen® Healthcare Information Systems provides the software for the integrated EMR and practice management system. The NextGen® EMR product facilitates clinical workflow and manages data related to patient care, treatment, and outcomes. Its NextGen® Enterprise Practice Management product streamlines front and back office administration, scheduling, billing, and reporting. SeeBeyond® is providing the essential IT integration infrastructure to enable Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA)-based systems integration. The SeeBeyond Integrated Composite Application Network Suite (SeeBeyond ICAN 5) Suite provides a web-based framework that lets a physician's existing computer equipment interface with NextGen's software and other third-party applications. No new or special equipment is required. Current third-party software includes RelayHealthTM, which is a secure online messaging service that patients can use to book appointments, request prescriptions, communicate with their physician, and get lab results. SeeBeyond is also implementing "Single Patient View" Enterprise-wide Master Patient Index (eMPI) technology that allows Hill Physicians to create unique patient records with consolidated information from multiple sources like doctors, hospitals, laboratories, and other healthcare providers. "SeeBeyond is pleased to have the opportunity to work with Hill Physicians to assist them in deploying a world class electronic healthcare information network," said Wayne Owens, General Manager of Healthcare for SeeBeyond. "Most exciting is the deployment of an enterprise-wide Master Patient Index that will dramatically increase patient safety and quality of medical care by consolidating a patient's complete medical history into a "single patient view" across a continuum of care." Tellurian NetworksTM will host and manage the NextGen and SeeBeyond applications and data, and provide private broadband connectivity to individual Hill Physicians practices. This will include redundant connectivity for business continuity. Tellurian Networks' extensive nationwide network will provide T1, DS3, and DSL lines that will allow individual practices to affordably transmit large amounts of text data and rich media (e.g., x-rays, MRIs, and EKGs), thanks to economies resulting from the size of Hill Physicians. "This is a very good solution for providers in the Hill Physicians network," said Joe Giroux, Vice President of Tellurian Networks. "The total cost per practice will be significantly lower than if individual practices did this on their own. It allows smaller practices in the Hill Physicians network to operate like Kaiser and other giant medical practices, maybe even better given the additional functionality that the system will offer." Hill Physicians expects that the new EMR system will be widely adopted by its providers, even though they will not be required to use it. By using NextGen's solution, hosted by Tellurian and powered by SeeBeyond's integration platform, Hill Physicians doctors can avoid expensive IT investments and get turnkey technical support. The system is also designed to support most legacy IT infrastructures where necessary. Hill Physicians began its evaluation of EMR systems in 2003, well before the National Health Information Infrastructure (NHII) initiative ordered by President Bush in 2004. This initiative calls for all Americans to have electronic health records within the next ten years. An important aspect of the President's initiative is the development of a nationwide interoperable health information technology infrastructure that can facilitate improvements in safety, quality, efficiency, and care coordination. When completed, Hill Physicians' integrated EMR system deployment will be an important step in meeting this national goal.
